Even in Retirement You Need To Get Out There and Network!

Our book talks about finding something rewarding and fulfilling in retirement.  That sounds terrific, but how do we find it?  Step one is to get yourself out there and investigate.  There are many online lists of opportunities for retirees, but reading the lists and emailing an application doesn’t usually work.  Start by attending a lecture, program, club or organization that may interest you.  When you get there, make the effort to meet the others attending.  For some of us that is difficult, but you need to make the effort to get the result.  The program you attend may not be what you were looking for, but someone you met has an idea or suggestion that can be followed up.

Recently my wife thought that she may want to substitute teach. There is a great need for this and she was a teacher early in her life.  She met with a local school district and through the discussions they found out that pre retirement she was a Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Educator.  It turned out they had a need for someone just like her to consult in her field, diabetes, on a part-time basis.  It is an ideal situation which she is really enjoying and giving back.  If she had not made the effort to connect with others, this opportunity would not have developed.

So, Get Out There!!
