BOOKS WORTH READING*

Retirement Game-Changers: Strategies for a Healthy, Financially Secure, and Fulfilling Long Life -- by Steve Vernon.  We face game-changing challenges in our retirement years, including longer lives than our parents and grandparents, the demise of traditional pension and retiree health plans, periodic stock market crashes that can derail our retirement, and sky-high medical and long-term care costs. Retirement Game-Changers helps you navigate these challenges as you transition from your work life into your retirement years.

Disrupt Aging: A Bold New Path to Living Your Best Life at Every Age – by Jo Ann Jenkins.  We've all seen the ads on TV and in magazines--"50 is the new 30!" or "60 is the new 40!"  A nice sentiment to be sure, but CEO of AARP Jo Ann Jenkins disagrees. 50 is 50, and she, for one, likes the look of it.  In Disrupt Aging, Jenkins focuses on three core areas--health, wealth, and self--to show us how to embrace opportunities and change the way we look at getting older. She chronicles her own journey and that of others who are making their mark as disrupters to show readers how we can be active, healthy, and happy as we get older. Through this powerful and engaging narrative, she touches on all the important issues facing people 50+ today, from caregiving and mindful living to building age-friendly communities and making our money last. This is a book for all the makers and doers who have a desire to continue exploring possibilities, to celebrate discovery over decline, and to seek out opportunities to live the best life there is.

What Should I Do with the Rest of My Life: True Stories of Finding Success, Passion, and True Meaning in the Second Half of Life – by Bruce Frankel.  The subtitle of this book is more descriptive of the book's contents than the main title that makes it sound like a "self-help" book. If this book functions as a self-help book it will be because of what the reader brings to the stories. The book is made up of thirteen short stories of people who didn't conclude that the game was over when they neared retirement age. Instead they started the second half of their lives doing exceptional things. Perhaps not everybody can be blessed with the health and energy needed to achieve great things. Nevertheless, there's plenty of room for all of us to consider our options and seek options that are opened up by the new circumstances of retirement.

Purposeful Retirement -- by Hyrum Smith, one of the original creators of the popular Franklin Day Planner, and the former Chairman and CEO of Franklin Covey Company shows how to move from the world of work, simplify life and enter what can be the most satisfying phase of life ─ a new world of purposeful retirement and good living.

Don't Retire; Rewire, Third Edition – by Jeri Sedlar and Rick Miners, helps those new to retirement, and those approaching it, channel their energy and experience into new possibilities that can be financially and personally rewarding--whether it's a part-time job, volunteer work, or even a next career.  Inside you'll find lots of practical advice and plenty of real-life stories from retirees who have successfully made the transition. You'll discover the motivational drivers you never knew you had, then you'll learn how to use them to achieve a fun, fulfilling, and financially-sound future--at work or at play!

The Longevity Economy: Unlocking the World’s Fastest-Growing, Most Misunderstood Market – by Joseph F. Coughlin.  Coughlin provides deep insight into a population that consistently defies expectations: people who, through their continued personal and professional ambition, desire for experience, and quest for self-actualization, are building a striking, unheralded vision of longer life that very few in business fully understand. His focus on women--they outnumber men, control household spending and finances, and are leading the charge toward tomorrow's creative new narrative of later life--is especially illuminating. As the demographics of global aging transform and accelerate, it is now critical to build a new understanding of the shifting physiological, cognitive, social, family, and psychological realities of the longevity economy.

Great Jobs for Everyone 50+: Finding Work That Keeps You Happy and Healthy...and Pays the Bills – by Kerry Hannon. This has become the job-hunting bible for people in their forties, fifties, and beyond. With her no-nonsense style, Hannon shows where the opportunities are and how to get them, with expert tips on revamping a résumé, networking, interviewing like a pro, building a social media platform to stand out in the crowd, and much more. Whether you took early retirement, were laid off, are seeking a job that you will love, need supplemental income, or want to stay engaged and make a difference by giving back with your talents, Hannon’s book is an essential tool. The truth is that many companies are looking for candidates with your experience, expertise, and maturity. The trick is finding those employers—and going into your search with a positive attitude and realistic expectations. Great Jobs shows you how to avoid common job-seeking mistakes and helps you find your ideal employment in today’s landscape.
