Slow Population Growth=Opportunity
I have been following for a number of years the population decline in the USA (as well as the world). As an ex-recruiter this has always been of interest, since a decline in workers affects recruiting needs. This decline is not only an issue of finding qualified individuals to fill jobs, employers will also have trouble finding human beings to fill the space. See chart below.
I spoke to a teacher recently who has been teaching for 4 years and told me she is 35 with no children. She and her husband are considering not having children citing as reasons, the state of the economy, world crisis’ and the costs. I spoke to her about some of the problems that arise with a low birth rate. She asked if I meant that there will be no kids to take care of her as she ages, I said, no, people in general. This attitude is pervasive throughout millennial’s and is contributing to the decline in population.
That said, luckily many retirees have been picking up the slack. I see more older people holding jobs. Some may be out of necessity to supplement income, but others do it to have it for an IKIGAI, a purpose and reason to get up in the morning.
For those of you who have considered this, now is the time to seek out opportunities. Due to this lack of candidates, organizations are more open minded to consider candidates that don’t necessarily have the exact background for the job, as they sought in the past, but for candidates with lots of experience, transferable skills and strong work ethic. Do not limit yourself to looking for jobs only within your comfort zone based on your previous work experience. Also consider opportunities that interest you or that you have passion for. With the high unemployment there are many opportunities out there, we just have to find them.
